Requesting an Informational Interview

Subject Line: Request for Informational Interviews

Dear _________,

My name is John Otto, and I am a student at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in the International Education Management program. As you may recall, we had the chance to speak briefly at the NAFSA Conference in Sacramento in October. I really enjoyed learning about some of the work that you do, and I am hoping to reconnect and discuss more of your insights in Miami.

(Explanation of how – if at all – you know the person and why you are reaching out).

I will be attending the Diversity Abroad conference in the role of a conference reporter for my school, and upon return to the Middlebury Institute in Monterey, I look forward to sharing resources and ideas from conference attendees and presenters with the students, faculty, and staff. I am reaching out because I am excited to connect at the conference in Miami this coming week, and I was hoping that we might be able to schedule a time (10 to 20 minutes) between Sunday and Tuesday to talk about your organization and some of the diversity and inclusion work that you do.

(Description of where and when you would like to speak, for how long, and about what specific topic).

Please let me know if you would like to find a time to speak at the conference, and what your availability looks like.

(Clear ask and outline next steps in the communication process).

Thank you so much in advance, and I look forward to (re)connecting with you!

(Final thank you and wording that suggests the interviewee will respond positively to your email).

All best,

John Otto
